Theatre News Roundup: 9/4-9/5

I know I promised you some thoughts on The Odyssey but I'm still a little tired after getting up early to get the tickets and seeing the show last night. For now, I'll say that it's a fun night out. I'd see if you get the chance. But it's not a great work of theatre and it likely won't impress you with any new insights if you're already familiar with the story.


Another Op’nin, Another Show (OPENINGS)
  • Todd Almond's adaptation of The Odyssey for The Public Theater runs from September 4-7 at the Delacorte in Central Park

  • The Music Box Theatre's box office opens for King Charles III on September 5.

It’s Only a Play (PLAYS)
  •  InViolet Theater Company has announced plans to present Bixby Elliot's new play Sommergufl. The production will begin previews September 19 at the 4th Street Theatre with a run scheduled through October 10. Sommerfugl is inspired by the true story of Lili Elbe, the first person to have gender reassignment surgery in 1930. The play follows Elbe and her wife, Grete, who remained by her side until the end.
They Mean Chicago, Illinois (CHICAGO NEWS)
  • Steppenwolf Theatre opens its 40th-anniversary season in Chicago with a world-premiere stage adaptation of John Steinbeck's East of Eden. East of Eden begins performances September 17 in advance of a September 27 opening.
A Foggy Day in London Town (UK NEWS)
  • Richard Eyre will direct Ibsen's Little Eyolf with Lydia Leonard and Robert Icke will direct Chekov's Uncle Vanya for London's Almeida Theatre
  • Close to You- Bacharach Reimagined (a retitled version of Off-Broadway's What's It All About) will transfer to the West End's Criterion Theatre.
Let Me Be Your Star (TV NEWS)
  • Keith David will star in Greenleaf, a new series about a Memphis megachurch, on OWN
Stop! Wait! What?! (EVERYTHING ELSE)
  •  A memorial tribute will be held for Roger Rees on September 21 at 1pm at the New Amsterdam Theatre. General admission seating will be available to the public.
  • Broken Box Mime Theater has announced its newest show, Above Below. Set to contemporary music mixed live by DJ Christopher Ross, the production will begin performances at HERE Arts Center on October 2 and run through October 25. Opening night is set for October 5.
