    Theatre News Roundup: 7/29

    Hello bunnies,

I caught a matinee of Significant Other today. I'm debating whether or not to write a full review because full disclosure, I was late (I missed my stop and had to walk back) and I missed the first 10-15 minutes of the show. I just don't know if it would be fair to critique the show without having the whole picture. It did make me feel feels and I think Gideon Glick's performance was strong but I don't think it entirely works as a whole. The main character is difficult to sympathize with and a lot of the script and set choices took me out of the show. It's competent but not great. I definitely preferred Of Good Stock. There were some very good isolated scenes in terms of writing and acting but I didn't fully connect to it and I definitely didn't find it as funny as I think I was supposed to. There was also a bit of cell phone hell going on for whatever reason. How hard is it to turn off your phone, people?

    Hello my loves,

Sorry for the delay. I saw an amazing show Sunday, Mrs. Smith's Broadway Cat-Tacular which you should definitely try to catch before it closes September 20. Thoughts to come as soon as I can think in coherent sentences again. The beginning of the week is a busy time for me. I spent the last few hours writing a recap and OK, yeah, last night I watched a Hedwig bootleg. It's my own fault I'm tired.

    Theatre News Roundup: 7/25

    Hello everyone,

I had a great time this afternoon at Of Good Stock. I didn't know what to expect. I wouldn't say I went in with low expectations but I was open to being disappointed. I actually found it to be a very good play. Thoughts to come. There was a slight twinge of misogyny and little bits of the writing that felt artificial and took me out of the moment but other than those small complaints I found myself very much charmed and entertained. The entire cast was fantastic and I really liked the set design. Spare and sparse stagings are all well and good but sometimes it's nice to really feel immersed in the world of a show.

I saw Preludes again tonight. I'm glad that I did though it's debatable whether or not it improved on a second viewing. I was better able to appreciate it as a whole and I wasn't as blinded (or blind-sided) by the final therapy scene but of course you lose something when you know which emotional beats are coming. Thoughts coming soon-ish!

    Theatre News Roundup: 7/20

I had a lot of fun tonight at the Broadway Sings Bruno Mars concert. I'm thinking about Broadway Sings Sara Bareilles if I can get a discounted ticket. The performers were all great but I didn't love all of the arrangements and it was only a little over an hour so I don't think I'd ever pay as much as I would for a ticket to an actual show.

Apropos of nothing, does anyone have any recommendations for the upcoming NY Fringe Festival? Any friends who have projects you're excited about? Obviously, I've mainly got my eye on the musicals. I like the sound of Far From Canterbury (even though it's not one of my favorite actual stories in The Canterbury Tales) and Plath (because The Bell Jar got too real at times). Beware the Chupacabra, Under: A New Musical, and The Portable Dorothy Parker (not a musical) also peaked my interest. But I'm not in a place where blindly spending $18 on unknown shows is a great use of discretionary funds so I would appreciate some recommendations from someone who knows something about the creatives or the material. Thanks!
